Back To The 1950s

Postwar America in the 1950's saw many innovations in American housing, but one still worthy of duplicating is the small ranch home that was built to be affordable to many homebuyers.  Limited in features, these homes nevertheless put the American dream of homeownership within reach.  The mega builder Levitt was the most famous mass producer of these homes (Levittown New York and in Bucks County , PA to name but two) but the idea was copied all over.

Here in Lancaster county there is a neighborhood of these homes on the edge of  Millersville.  I just listed one for sale at 1923 Wabank Road.  It's a great alternative to attached townhouse or apartment-style housing and gives you convenient one floor living.  With an addition to the rear it's bigger than many of it's neighbors but still is considered a small home.
The difference between then and now is that in the 1950's and 60's relatively large families lived in these homes.  Bunk beds in every room meant families with 3 or 4 children could cope with the space.  These days many of these homes are starter homes for familes with no or only a few young children, or for other folks who appreciate having no stairs to deal with.  For any buyer it's an affordable alternative to renting an apartment.
Call me to take a look at 1923 Wabank Road.  It carries a Lancaster address but it's in Millersville borough, just a long block from the new elementary school.
